DIY 2013 - Workshop Schedule

Chakra Shower w/ Kusudama    Lying under Kusudamas, experience what these perfect forms can do for you and your well being.  Join workshop on its own or in combination with the previous where we craft the intricate and powerful, Kusudama origami.

Clone Yourself (DIY DNA)           Ever wondering what your genes actually look like? In this workshop, you will extract high quality genes from your cheek cells. You'll also get to preserve and keep your DNA, so if you ever decide to clone yourself, the first and the trickiest step would already be done.

Compost - Turn Scraps to Soil     Harness the power of worms with Jewish Farm School. Learn to utilize them as a mini-utilitarian workforce to break up raw waste and make wonderful rich soil.  Find out what makes composting is a Jewish Practice.

Couples massage          Give and Receive.  Learn how to do both, well.

Dreams into Reality       Workshop participants have a chance to create a clear vision of finding healing, romance, financial success or anything else they desire. Using music, metaphors and trance, we will explore the space between reality and imagination. The goal of the exercises is to open up and access hidden internal resources and to utilize our subconscious to our benefit.

Drum and Dance Circle         The workshop portion of our day will culminate in a central drum circle.  Drums, varied instruments, rhythm, movement, voice.  Everyone is welcome to join in.  Feel the beat.  You don’t have to know how to drum.  If you feel it, go with it. 

Egyptian Reflexology            Reflexology is a massage therapy used to relieve tension and treat illness by applying circular pressure to ‘reflex points’ on the feet, hands and head. These reflex points connect to the sensory nerves of the whole body. Reflexology dates back to 2330 BC as some inscriptions were found displaying ancient Egyptians practicing this kind of medical treatment. For many this is the perfect method to guarantee a balanced mental and physical well-being.

Finger Painting for Adults            Express yourself the way only kids can.   All boundaries off in this art therapy and creative design inspired workshop.

First Aid - CPR & Tourniquets      HeartSaversNY will teach the basics of resuscitation and constriction as first aid.  Always best to be prepared.

Gongs & Didgeridoos             Learn to play, hear and understand these unique instruments.  How can musical tones and vibrations affect us physically, mentally and emotionally?

Hydroponics                 Hydroponics  is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil. The urban gardener in you will enjoy seeing hydroponic farming on a small scale using a very simple recycled soda bottle technique and the "wick" system. This workshop by Boswyck Farms includes a brief discussion on the history of hydroponics, a discussion on the basics of growing hydroponically, and an overview of several systems. Learn to build your own hydroponic system.

Jewelry Making          Tibetan bracelets and easy wire techniques for earrings and other jewelry, led by Ira Kotikova of LightBugsConnect Jewelry.

Jewish Meditation            Jewish Meditation incorporates gentle yoga, breathing Kavannah, or sacred intention, bringin  greater joy, flexibility, and awareness to your everyday life.  Contemplation of a Kavannah is a timeless Jewish contemplative practice and is essential for deepening spiritual development.

Krav Maga (Israeli Martial Arts)            Krav Maga has a philosophy emphasizing threat neutralization, simultaneous defensive and offensive maneuvers, and aggression. Krav Maga is used by Israeli Defense Forces, both regular and special forces, and several closely related variations have been developed and adopted by law enforcement and intelligence organizations, Mossad and Shin Bet.

Kusudama Origami                 In Japanese Kusudama means “Healing Ball.” This form of paper origami is created by gluing multiple identical pyramidal units to form a spherical shape. Kusudamas are believed to hold a Sacred Geometric forms and elements and come in a tremendous variety. In this workshop you will learn to make a simple Kusudama and if you choose to partake in the next workshop you may see its healing properties in action.

Kvas 101                       What is Kvas,  how is it made, and from what?  Learn the history of this wonderful drink and find out why it’s good for the body; taste different types of kvas including an awesome Beet Kvas from our friends at Gefilteria. Try your hand and kvas mixology.

Mandala Painting                    Mandala in Sanskrit means "circle" and is a spiritual and ritual symbol representing the Universe. The basic form of most mandalas is a square with four gates containing a circle with a center point. Mandalas often exhibit radial balance and are incredibly intricate and bright, allowing one to unleash creatively.

Pirozhki                     You've enjoyed eating them, now learn to make them like babushka.  This workshop will focus on dough making technique and feature egg and onion filling.

Pop-up Paper Card Engineering                We all loved three-dimensional, movable books as kids - something so intricate from simple paper. Learn how pop up cards are made and have a DIY gift for any occasion.

Portrait techniques for the Smartphone Modern cell phones can take high res shots better than many hand held cameras just a few years ago.  Join photographer Adi Shniderman in front of a seamless roll and the setting sun, learn lighting and positioning techniques, and delve into the idea of Jewish identity within portraiture.

Real Cheese and Cheesecake    Make cheese and cheesecake from scratch. Learn about milk processing and the milk industry in America.

Rugelah                   Rugelah is pastry made with cream-cheese dough and different fillings - nuts, jams, dried fruit.  More than that, it’s a simple, traditional Jewish desert many a grandmas made with recipes from the heart.

Sauerkraut Pickling/Fermentation                What started as a way to stretch the harvest grew into its own food group. Jewish Farm School will school us on pickling and preservation of fresh vegetables.  Learn how to make real sauerkraut, what fermentation is all about, and why it’s better for the body than other methods of preservation.   How could we have survived without all things sour and delicious?

Sock Puppets & Alter Egos          Who are we behind that which we create?  Take home a puppet and a new alter ego.

Stop-motion animation (on-going)                      An animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own. This workshop will continue throughout the day, with each group contributing a piece of animation, which will culminate in one complete movie that will be screened in the evening.

Tango          The tango is a partner dance that originated in the 1890s along the Río de la Plata, the natural border between Argentina and Uruguay, and soon spread to the rest of the world. Tango comes in many forms. If you are new to tango, learn the basics.  If you've been a fan for years, learn a new twist.

Tantra 101                   A practice that brings together meditation and ritual with the goal of transforming in the body to facilitate heightened states of awareness.  Analyze your relationship with the sense of touch.  Find yourself anew within another's space.

Tiramisu -"   Pick me up" or "lift me up" is an Italian dessert made of ladyfingers dipped in coffee, layered with a whipped mixture of egg yolks and mascarpone cheese, and flavored with cocoa.[1]  In a word, it’s a delicious dessert

Unfolding Group Creativity        Learn approaches that tap into the creativity of a group. By holding and facilitating an open forum, we will create a space in which individual voices form a mosaic through which the creative energy of the group can emerge.

Vodka Infusion                  Some drink it plain, some down with chasers, we prefers ours infused.  Ginger, Orange, Berry, Garlic, whatever you crave. Learn how to make it @home.

Yoga                Yoga (Sanskrit: योग) is a commonly known generic term for the physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India with a view to attain a state of permanent peace. Modern Yoga is a stress-relieving practice that involves stretching, controlled breathing, and relaxing the mind. The poses yoga is famous for are used to stretch particular muscles and focus one’s energy and thoughts in order to relax.

Your Own Talisman      Create your own ceremonial object with Jewish Art Salon. Amulets were first mentioned in the Talmud 2,000 years ago; ancient & current Kabbalists abided by them. There has been a renewed interest lately in hamsas and talismans. Participants make their own amulet/talisman. We will discuss the role of amulets in Judaism and talk about own artistic and spiritual traditions.
